20% Salary Cut
"Difficult economic times require local governments to make changes. I voluntarily reduced the Treasurer salary by 20% in 2009. I was concerned about the fiscal issues facing the Township and wanted to saving taxpayer dollars without sacrificing services to the residents of Meridian Township.

Under my plan there are no changes to services provided to the public. The Treasurer's office is open 5 days per week from 8am-5pm.

Responsibility for Salary Changes
You may wonder, who is responsible for elected officials salary changes? Meridian Township has an Elected Officials Compensation Commission. They are charged with setting the salaries and compensation of all the Township's Boards and Commissions. The Elected Official Compensation Commission met in spring of 2009 and recommended making my suggested change. I appeared before the elected officials compensation commission and asked them in writing to reduce the salary of the Treasurer. This is the legal procedure for the salary reduction to occur. Individuals can reduce their salary while in office by simply requesting it in writing. I am the only Township board member to have made this request. The EOCC is met in 2011 and made recommendations on salaries for 2011-13 for the Township Board.
